Atlas of Canada

Tourist attractions are both nature based and cultural. Nature-based travel and cultural tourism are increasingly popular. Nature-based tourism is centred on enjoying the great outdoors. It can include adventure tourism and ecotourism. Ecotourism is a form of travel that enables visitors to discover natural areas and understand, through interpretation and education, the natural and cultural sense of places while preserving their integrity. Adventure tourism proposes vacations that include outdoor sports such as hiking, canoeing, kayaking, skiing, horseback riding and cycling. Cultural tourism focuses on experiencing the arts, heritage, history, cuisine and special character of places. Whether your interest is in nature or culture, Canada has tourist attractions that are well worth a visit.

Many areas have such great cultural or natural value that they have been recognized by the Government of Canada and even the international organization, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization). The Atlas presents maps of these outstanding natural and cultural attractions that have been set aside by the Canadian government for their protection and enjoyment. The maps locate these attractions and link you to tourism Web sites where you can get details of what they have to offer.

Canada is the second largest country in the world with an area of close to 10 million square kilometres. Although sometimes far apart, the tourist attractions presented in the Atlas are easily accessed by a well integrated transportation infrastructure consisting of a network of road, rail, ports and airports. The Atlas of Canada maps are small-scale, not ideal for navigational purposes. In Canada, road maps and other large-scale maps are produced at the provincial level. Each province and territory also promotes its own tourist industry and operates provincial and often regional tourist offices. References to public transportation, whether by road, rail or air, as well as Web links to provincial tourist offices, road maps and provincial parks are included for your convenience. Have a good trip!
